  1. Online Courses Sioux City Schools

  2. Issue • Online classes have been reserved for AP Students, students could take online courses from U of I, but only at North High School • W.I.T. has some “Great Starts” classes that are online. These are dual credit. Currently there are 27 NHS students, 19 at EHS and 2 at WHS. • Struggling learners at NHS and EHS can use Plato in the Academic Enhancement Center. These are NOT online courses, just online content for credit recovery. • General Student population has no course offerings that are strictly online.

  3. What’s been done? • NWAEA has purchased a subscription to the Monterey Institute’s HippoCampus Online Course’s.

  4. Moodle • Course Management Website is established through Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment)

  5. Introducing Pinnacle Instruction

  6. Course Management Systems • Advantages to Pinnacle over Moodle: • Gradebook and Curriculum viewer are in the same place. • Online Assessments go directly to Gradebook. • Teachers can build discussion boards and add assignments directly from one login screen • Students can view assignments and gradebook and messages from teachers all from one screen.

  7. Resourcing • Personnel • Need teachers that will spend time building online courses for credit to offer in our course catalog. • Need course components to be developed that can be used for credit recovery in Academic Enhancement Centers. • Need Advanced Placement course opportunities developed to be taken in an online or hybrid style. • Student E-mail (coming Fall 2010) • Student’s taking online courses will need access to communication tool, such as email or messaging service.

  8. Way Ahead • All HS students required to take a course in online or hybrid format as graduation requirement. • Online courses developed for every discipline. • Online course offerings developed that cannot be taken any other way (i.e. Internet Safety, Grammar and others) • Potential of all students having a laptop….
