  2. Self-directed exercise Hi and welcome! This presentation is designed to introduce basic skills in mensuration, classifying items and setting down measured information for construction work. The first few slides contain textual information which gives a guide to the presentation.

  4. This presentation leads you through an exercise which involves the measurement of the tiling to the floors and walls of a swimming pool. It replicates the Private Study Exercise from week three with the addition of explanatory notes and sketches. You should have the paper copy of the Private Study Exercise for the swimming pool together with the relevant drawing ready when you go through this presentation.

  5. You can undertake the exercise on either of two levels. Level 1: If you are still not sure about the basics of how construction measurement information is derived and recorded, and would appreciate being led through the exercise by undertaking some step by step tasks. Level 2: If you are fairly confident with the basics of how construction measurement information is derived and recorded – get straight into it!!!

  11. In the position illustrated by the red line and arrow on the previous slide, the face of the pool wall is trapezoidal in shape. The top edge of the wall is level and, as shown on the drawing, is 3.50 metres long. The depth of the pool at the shallow end is 300mm … … the bottom edge of the wall is sloping.

  15. The next slide presents some animated sketches which illustrate the calculation of the pool depth at the 3.50 metre line. The top left quarter shows how this information would be recorded on the take off sheet.
