Measurement & Estimating (Unit SRE272) Self-directed exercise Classifying and Measuring Surfaces This is a PowerPoint presentation containing links to Excel spreadsheets.
Self-directed exercise Hi and welcome! This presentation is designed to introduce basic skills in mensuration, classifying items and setting down measured information for construction work. The first few slides contain textual information which gives a guide to the presentation.
Well done! Thank you for taking the initiative to click the advance button. In this presentation when these buttons appear you can advance ( ) or go back ( ) by clicking on the appropriate arrow with your mouse.
This presentation leads you through an exercise which involves the measurement of the tiling to the floors and walls of a swimming pool. It replicates the Private Study Exercise from week three with the addition of explanatory notes and sketches. You should have the paper copy of the Private Study Exercise for the swimming pool together with the relevant drawing ready when you go through this presentation.
You can undertake the exercise on either of two levels. Level 1: If you are still not sure about the basics of how construction measurement information is derived and recorded, and would appreciate being led through the exercise by undertaking some step by step tasks. Level 2: If you are fairly confident with the basics of how construction measurement information is derived and recorded – get straight into it!!!
Which level would you like to try? If you wish to change at any stage you can switch back and forth between the levels during the exercise. Level 1 Level 2
Important! • Always use the advance and go back buttons in order to continue. • You will also find it useful to print out diagrams as you work through the presentation. Forward in Level 1 Back in Level 1 Forward in Level 2 Back in Level 2

In the position illustrated by the red line and arrow on the previous slide, the face of the pool wall is trapezoidal in shape. The top edge of the wall is level and, as shown on the drawing, is 3.50 metres long. The depth of the pool at the shallow end is 300mm … … the bottom edge of the wall is sloping.
Step 1: The next forward link in Level 1 takes you to a spreadsheet where you are asked to carry out a task … ….To return, close the Excel window (Do not save) Step 2: When you return from the spreadsheet … Click the forward arrow to continue
On the next slide the second red line indicates the opposite wall … … for future reference we note that this wall is a mirror image of the opposite side and also trapezoidal in shape.

The next slide presents some animated sketches which illustrate the calculation of the pool depth at the 3.50 metre line. The top left quarter shows how this information would be recorded on the take off sheet.
