  1. New Topic: The Restless Earth Learning Objectives: To recap the structure of the Earth, Convection Currents, and the 2 main types of crust.

  2. Our Earth is restless! • http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-12109625 • http://www.bbc.co.uk/search/news/?q=earthquake%20cumbria • http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/kml.php • WHY? • What can you remember from Yr9? • Brainstorm in small groups any key words, places, diagrams etc that you can remember.

  3. The Structure of the Earth http://www.learner.org/interactives/dynamicearth/structure.html Label your diagram with the thicknesses of the layers, temperatures and chemical composition using Geog 1 page108

  4. Journey to the centre of the Earth • You are digging a tunnel to the centre of the Earth. • what is the Earth like at 1m, 100m, 1km, 1000km, 5000km and 6000km. • Draw a quick table and say which layer you would be in and describe the material around you.

  5. The Crust is broken up into plates

  6. A convection current is... Because of the intense heat of the inner core (6000C), heat waves move out into the mantle. These heat waves move through the molten rock and cause the molten rock to move. As the heat approaches the crust, it cools down and sinks back towards the core, where the process starts again. The plates (broken pieces of the earth’s crust) float on top of the mantle and so are pulled in the same direction as the convection currents.

  7. Why do the plates move?

  8. There are 2 main types of Crust: Continental Crust Oceanic Crust Mainly made of Basalt About 5 km thick on average. A thin but heavy (more dense) layer of rock. • Mainly made of Granite • Despite being thicker about (on average 30km thick) it is lighter (less dense)!

  9. The Structure of our Planet Which part of the Earth is: • The hottest part. • The part that we live on. • Like the fleshy part of the apple. • Made up of oceanic and continental. • 5. Solid because the pressure is so high that everything is squashed together. • Molten. • 7. Between 5 – 65km thick. • 8. Made up of liquid metal. • 9. The sea bed. • 10. Between 5500oC - 6000oC • 11.The source of heat inside the Earth. • 12.The place where you will find convection currents.

  10. The plates of the Earth have shifted over the years! Future continents will look quite different.

  11. Plenary: Here are some answers from today’s lesson. What were the questions? • The Core • Basalt • Iron and Nickel • 5500 - 6000°C • Plates • Eurasian Plate • Convection Currents • Lava lamp • Ring of Fire • Jigsaw
