ASK YOUR PREACHER/PASTOR Or PRIEST “WHAT DO THE SCRIPTURES SAY ABOUT THE SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER?” – part one (“CAN WE LOSE OUR SALVATION?”)
The Scriptures Teach…. • Revelation 2:10b - Be thou faithfulunto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (KJV) • Matthew 10:22 - And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endurethto the end shall be saved. (KJV)
The Scriptures Teach…. • Hebrews 3:6 - But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firmunto the end. (KJV) • Hebrews 3:14 - For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end. (KJV)
The Scriptures Teach…. • Hebrews 6:11-12 -11 “And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligenceto the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (KJV)
Thus The Scriptures Teach…. • A CROWN OF LIFE IS PROMISED: • TO THOSE FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH • ASSURANCE OF SALVATION IS FOR: • THOSE WHO ENDURE TO THE END • THE STEDFAST WHO HOLD FAST • THE QUESTION THEN ARISES, DO THE SCRIPTURES TEACH: “ONCE WE ARE ‘TRULY’ SAVED, WE CAN NEVER LOSE OUR SALVATION”?
THE TEACHING OF MANY“ONCE SAVED - ALWAYS SAVED” • TERMS USED FOR THIS DOCTRINE: - “ETERNAL SECURITY OF BELIEVERS” - “PERSEVERANCE/PRESERVATION OF THE SAINTS” - “IMPOSSIBILITY OF APOSTASY” - AND OTHER TERMS
THE TEACHING OF MANY“ONCE SAVED - ALWAYS SAVED” THE BASIC DOCTRINE: - WHEN GOD SAVES A PERSON, THAT PERSON CAN NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, FORFEIT SALVATION. - THIS DOCTRINE IS SO WIDELY TAUGHT AS TO NEED NO DOCUMENTATION.
“ONCE SAVED - ALWAYS SAVED”Importance of this study If God’s word teaches that we can be saved and then turn away and be lost, we are horribly deceived by the doctrine of “Once Saved – Always Saved.” If this is true, those who teach people that they cannot ever lose their salvation are teaching a grave error – they are giving people assurance when they should be warning them.
Once Saved – Always Saved??? • This presentation will maintain that the Scriptures teach that one who has actually been cleansed of sins, (who, therefore, has been saved from sin) can “fall from grace,” and be condemned eternally.
BE ASSURED! • We are NOT suggesting that “true believers” have no basis for assurance or security. The scriptures show a clear basis for such confidence. • We intend to show that the scriptures teach that we must begin and continue in faithfulness in order to enter and continue in a saving relationship with God.
Historical Information David W. Bercot; Will The Real Heretics Please Stand Up: A New Look at Today’s Evangelical Church in the Light of Early Christianity, p. 65. “Since the early Christians believed that our continued faith and obedience are necessary for salvation, it naturally follows that they believed that a “saved” person could still end up being lost.”
Historical Information • “Tertullian wrote, ‘Some people act as though God were under an obligation to bestow even on the unworthy His intended gift. They turn His liberality into slavery… For do not many afterwards fall out of grace? Is not this gift taken away from many?” (written between A.D. 190-210) - Bercot, p. 65.
“ONCE SAVED - ALWAYS SAVED???” Two frequent responses to passages that speak of “apostasy”/“falling away”: - The people were never truly saved - They only claim/appear to be saved. - If they were truly saved, they will never actually be lost. - They may lose part of their reward; they may be out of fellowship with God, etc. Test these responses in the following cases:
II Peter 2:20-22 Had these people been saved? 20 – escaped pollutions of world - see II Peter 1:4 Were they in danger of being lost? 20 – entangled and overcome 20 – latter end worse than first 21 – better not to have known… 22 – returned to defilement from which they had been cleansed
Hebrews 10:26-31 Had these people been saved? 26 - received knowledge of truth 29 – sanctified by blood of covenant Were they in danger of being lost? 26 – no more sacrifice 27 – judgment; fiery indignation - devour adversaries 28-29 – sorer punishment than physical death 31 – fearful thing to fall into God’s hands
Historical Information • “One of the Scripture passages that the early Christians frequently cited is Hebrews 10:26: ‘If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left.’ Our preachers usually tell us that the writer of Hebrews wasn’t talking about saved persons. If that’s the case, the writer certainly didn’t communicate it very effectively to his readers. All the early Christians understood this passage to be talking about persons who had been saved.”” - Bercot, p. 66.
Historical Information • “Incidentally, some of the quotations from the early Christians might make you think that they lived in eternal insecurity. But that’s not the case. Although they believed that their heavenly Father could disinherit them if He chose to do so, the overall spirit of their writings show that obedient Christians didn’t live with a constant morbid dread of being disinherited. Does an obedient son constantly worry and fret over the possibility of being disinherited by his earthly father?” - Bercot, p. 66.
“Assurance” passages • Do they support “Once Saved – Always Saved” doctrine? • John 10:27-29 – Gives assurance to those who “hear and follow” • External forces cannot overcome God’s power to keep the faithful. - No discussion of the “unfaithful” here - Those who choose to stop following are not in these verses.
“Assurance” passages • Do they support “Once Saved – Always Saved” doctrine? • I Peter 1:3-5 – Who are “kept” by the power of God? - The faithful!!! - If the faith ceases the “keeping” ceases!
“Assurance” passages • Do they support “Once Saved – Always Saved” doctrine? • Romans 8:31-39 • Those abiding in love of Christ: - are in Christ (v. 1) - are “spiritually minded (v. 6 and context) - love the Lord (v. 28) - External forces cannot separate - The unfaithful are not in these verses.
2nd July Program • Other passages showing “possibility of apostasy” • Other passages showing how we can have the assurance God gives. • How choice (God’s and ours) relates to the “possibility of apostasy.” - Israel as an example
