  1. LIDAR Scanning Sarah Sudduth Vizproto

  2. General Information • LIDAR= Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging • The technology uses ultraviolet, visible, or near infrared light to image objects and can be used with a wide range of targets. • Non-metallic objects • Rocks • Chemical Compounds • Aerosols • Single Molecules

  3. General Info Continued • Primarily used for atmospheric research and meteorology • Placed on aircraft and satellites for surveying and mapping various land features • The technology has been identified by NASA as a key technology for enabling autonomous precision safe landing of future robotic and crewed lunar landing vehicles

  4. Various Uses • Agriculture • Archaeology • Architecture • Biology and Conservation • Geology and Soil Science • Meteorology and Atmospheric Environment • Law Enforcement • Military • Physics and Astronomy • Robotics • Spaceflight • Land Surveying • Transportation- Adaptive Cruise Control • Wind Farm Optimization

  5. My Focus • Architecture Scanning • Ideal for historical renovations and repairs

  6. Example • http://youtu.be/s84mwHDKvF4 • High quality scan • Almost a virtual reality of an actual place

  7. Personal Interest • Fascinated with new, complex structures • Buildings that look like sculptures/hard distinction between architecture and sculpture

  8. Resource • Scott Cedarleaf • “We’re a Brooklyn-based 3D capture and modeling company always striving to capture and visualize the clearest, cleanest, and most workable RGB LiDAR and photo-based deliverables in the industry. Our focus is capturing data of sets, locations, environments, heads, bodies, props, and anything else you can think of.” • Skybucket3d.com

  9. Exploration • My initial idea was to evaluate structure and sculpture and how those two combine to create something extraordinary • Using rapid prototyping and 3D modeling to create sculptures out of structures
