  2. SIOUX How did the homeland affect their way of life?? • They Hunted & fished • Very little farming • Lots of buffalo herds on the plains • Buffalo became main food resource • Nomadic lives, follow source of food • Made tepees of buffalo hide

  3. SIOUX Why is storytelling important?? • Very important way of communication • Stories such as “Forgotten Ear of Corn” – teaches not to waste • “Peace Pipe” –when peace is achieved they need to seal the agreement, each smoke from pipe

  4. SIOUX What was special about the culture of this group? • Houses (tepees) belonged to the women of the tribe & they transported it. • Dependent on the buffalo herds to live • USED ALL the buffalo • Tepees easy to move, relocate

  5. SIOUX How did trade affect the Native American group discussed in the book • Traded furs with French in 17th century. • Trade with neighbor tribes influenced way of life • Traded buffalo furs and meat for corn

  6. SIOUX Give at least 3 examples of how this group adapted to their environment… • Tepees made of posts & buffalo hide • Set up & take down in under an hour • Allows for the tribe to move quickly – follow herds • WHEN they get the horse from Europeans, it will increase control over Mid-West
