  2. static electricity

  3. Definition: Charged particles on an object that are not balanced. Sentence: A build up of static electricity caused the boy’s hand to be shocked when he reached for the door knob.

  4. electric current

  5. Definition: An electrical charge in motion. • Sentence: In a series circuit, all devices wired into the circuit share the electric current equally.

  6. resistance

  7. Definition: a quality of an object which means that electric current cannot flow easily through it. • Sentence: A coiled wire is inside the light bulb. This wire is made of a material with a high resistance.

  8. series circuit

  9. Definition: a simple circular path in which an electric current flows only one way through each part of that circuit. • Sentence: In a series circuit, one missing or burnt-out bulb opens the circuit therefore no bulbs will light.

  10. parallel circuit

  11. Definition: a circuit with two or more paths for the electric charge to follow. • Sentence: A break or missing bulb does not cause all of the lights to go out in a parallel circuit.

  12. magnetism

  13. Definition: the property of attraction of an object that has a magnetic field. It can attract other objects made of metal • Sentence: Electricity and magnetism are closely related. Both are the result of charged particles moving.

  14. magnetic field

  15. Definition: the invisible force that loops between the poles of a magnet due to the arrangement of charges. The force is strongest at the poles, or ends, and gets weaker as distance from the magnet. • Sentence: Iron filings near a horseshoe magnet show that the magnetic field is strongest near the poles.

  16. electromagnet

  17. Definition: a coil of wire that causes a magnetic field when current moves through the wire. • Sentence: More coils and a larger core makes the electromagnet stronger.
