  1. Taking the LoTi Survey

  2. What is LoTi? • LoTi stands for the • Levels of Technology Implementation

  3. The LoTi framework was developed in 1994 by Dr.Chris Moersch as a scale that would accurately measure authentic classroom technology use.

  4. Research shows that the effective use of technology in the classroom has a positive effect on the following areas of instruction:

  5. Achievement • “Students … learn basic skills—reading, writing, and arithmetic—better and faster if they have a chance to practice those skills using technology.” www.apple.com/education/research

  6. Achievement • “Technology engages students, and as a result they spend more time on basic learning tasks than students who use a more traditional approach.” www.apple.com/education/research

  7. Retention • “Students who have the opportunity to use technology to acquire and organize information show a higher level of comprehension and a greater likelihood of using what they learn later in their lives.” www.apple.com/education/research

  8. Attendance • “Technology can decrease absenteeism, lower dropout rates, and motivate more students to continue on to college.” www.apple.com/education/research

  9. Quality Work • “Students who regularly use technology take more pride in their work, have greater confidence in their abilities, and develop higher levels of self-esteem.” www.apple.com/education/research

  10. The question becomes… • How do you measure effective use of technology?

  11. How do you work with teachers where they are to help them grow?

  12. How do you plan effective staff development so that it works for what the faculty needs?

  13. The answer is… • Gather quality data so that your decisions can be based on the Current Conditions.

  14. The LoTi Technology Use Profile is designed to do just that.

  15. The LoTi TUP was designed to measure three key areas: • 1. Classroom Teachers’ Level of Technology Implementation

  16. The LoTi TUP was designed to measure three key areas: • 2. Classroom Teachers’ • Personal Computer Use (PCU)

  17. The LoTi TUP was designed to measure three key areas: • 3. Classroom Teachers’ current instructional practices (CIP)

  18. By looking at the three areas separately and together the Profile gives schools the ability to…

  19. Create an action plan that focuses on specific areas of need within their faculty,

  20. Track the schools’ progress toward reaching the national or state “Target Technology” level,

  21. Consider the schools’ instructional computing decisions from a data-driven approach,

  22. Create an accountability mechanism to justify funding or special programs,

  23. Assess changes in the classroom teacher’s instructional practices relating to the use of computers,

  24. And finally… • effectively manage the efficient use of funds to meet documented needs.

  25. How can the classroom teacher aid this process?

  26. The best way is to take the 50 question survey as honestly as possible.

  27. The survey takes 20- 30 minutes to complete.

  28. Please respond to the statements in terms of your present uses of computers in the classroom.

  29. If a statement does not apply to you, please select a 0 response.

  30. Remember that your individual results are only for you. Your principal will only see the overall results.

  31. The Next Steps Action Plan will be developed based on the results for your building.

  32. Accurate measures of Current Conditions are important for future planning.

  33. Answer each question to the best of your ability, but try not to over-analyze any one question.

  34. This is NOT • a TEST! • It is common for teachers to score in the 0-4 range.

  35. The Results: • Once you complete the survey you will receive a score in three areas.

  36. Current Instructional Practices: • A spectrum that gauges the participant’s inclination toward instructional practices consistent with learner-based curriculum

  37. Personal Computer Use: • A spectrum that addresses an individual’s comfort and proficiency level with using computer

  38. LoTi Level of Technology Implementation: • A spectrum that “approximates the degree to which each participant is implementing or supporting the implementation of computers into the curriculum”

  39. Thank you for your time!
