2. In this project, YOU get to be the architect! (but what is an architect?) • An architect is a person whose job it is to design the plan for houses, buildings, stadiums, etc. • The design “BLUE PRINTS”, which are the plans for a building before it is built • Blue prints are from a birds eye view • You have to design a blue print before you build a house so you know if everything will fit! • You also have to design a blue print to see if the owner likes your design!

3. How do you become an architect…? • Skill for high level math, like trigonometry and calculus is important. As well, skill in drawing is invaluable. • In high school, teens can prepare for becoming an architect by constantly studying math, taking mechanical drawing when available, and also taking art classes that emphasizes drawing and painting. • Spending time in construction is also good. Volunteering to work for organizations like Habitat for Humanity can give one on-site building experience, and make a valuable impression on potential colleges.

4. In college, major in architecture, and get a masters degree in architecture. • College offers the chance to learn about the history of architecture, building codes, the physical aspects of creating designs, and more AutoCAD, as well as any other computer programs that can help put designs into three-dimensional models. • If city planning is more appealing, one might wish to pursue a degree in civil engineering as opposed to architecture • It can be of particular value to be bilingual. Many construction workers speak Spanish as their primary language. This is particularly the case in California, Arizona, and Texas. Being able to directly communicate with workers can be particularly helpful and inspiring to all involved in the building process.

Will Smith and Jada • House has its own lake, basketball court, tennis court and a pair of private golf holes in the backyard. • The estate took over seven years to build at $20 million. • Smith stated, “The problem is that you build your dream home, but then you’re seven years older so it’s the house you used to want real bad!”

15. For YOUR House… Most celebrity houses we have seen are between 4,000 square feet and 23,000 square feet YOUR house cannot be more than 15,000 square feet To give you an idea of how big a normal room is, let’s measure this classroom!

16. STEP ONE • Decide which rooms you want in your dream house. They can be ANYTHING you want! • Name all of your rooms. • Decide which room will be the biggest, next biggest, etc. all the way to the smallest bathroom • Don’t forget to include the basics! (kitchen, bathrooms, etc)

17. STEP TWO • Make a basic sketch of where you want your rooms to be (what will be next to each other, hallways, were doors are, etc) • It is easiest to make your rooms rectangle and square • At least 2 rooms must be square and 2 must be rectangles • Get your sketch approved by Ms. Hoyt

18. Step THREE • Get a piece of graph paper • ONE FOOT = ONE GRID SQUARE • Start with the main room. Make the perimeter walls. • Include ONE FOOT WALLS around each room. • Include where you want to place the doors • On your sheet, write the perimeter and area of Room ONE. Show your work. • Show Ms. Hoyt your work and drawing BEFORE you draw your next room.
