Big Challenges • Economic - global recession and eurozone financial crisis will impact on local economy for ten years • Social – high levels of deprivation and disadvantage • Environmental – legacy of industrial past and ageing high density housing • Marmot – detrimental impact on health over the life course of our citizens

Now 55,000 households with 140,000 people Young population – 30% aged 0-19 Significant South Asian population Increasing number of recent migrants By 2033 small growth of 5.1% to 146,500 Slightly more children and fewer workers 0-15 – about the same 33,900 to 34,200 older people – growth from 15% to 18% of population People Key: changing population structure and projected increase in older people

Global economic restructuring Eurozone market turmoil Impacts of 2008 recession and likely 2012 recession low growth and few additional full time jobs over the next 5-7 years Impacts of public sector cuts on women, families and children Local Economy • Key • continuing poverty and deprivation in our most disadvantaged communities • inequalities in distribution of unemployment and worklessness

High levels of material deprivation Eight neighbourhoods amongst the most deprived 1% nationally Relative deprivation increased between 2007 and 2010 Recession is expected to impact on mental illness, alcohol consumption, household debt, repossessions and homelessness Community • Key • continuing poverty and deprivation in our most disadvantaged communities • Increasing impacts of alcohol on residents health and communities

Compact urban areas set in countryside with steep valley sides Estimated 27,000 properties are non decent and 12,300 with a category 1 hazard Significant rural fringes with basic services Amongst worst authority areas for fuel poverty – 24% of households more than 30 in some neighbourhoods Place • Key • Poor and unfit housing lacking diverse housing provision • Fuel poverty

Child poverty –three in ten children, 4 in 10 in Bastwell, Sudell, Wensley Fold and Audley and half in Shadsworth with Whitebirk One in three children overweight – but evidence of low weight for some Teenagers more likely to be frequent consumers of alcohol and one in four smoke More die in their first year than expected Children and Young People • Key • Best start in life – early years and family support • Active and positive choices for children and young people

Increasing numbers of older and very old residents Life expectancy 3 years shorter than nationally and the gap is widening Higher mortality rates Highest rate of death from circulatory disease Significantly higher death rate from cancer Significant increase in alcohol related admissions – trebled over last ten years Death rate for chronic liver disease has risen and faster than the region or national rate Smoking rates are high with strong social inequalities Projected increase in dementia Adults

Adults • Key • work opportunities for current and future workforce at increasing income levels with high quality support to help all our residents into suitable employment • provide and encourage active and positive choices for residents should drive strategic initiatives to support active lifestyles • improve the quality and diversity of housing and to reduce levels of unfitness and the numbers of homes with category 1 hazards • provide flexible packages of care for the increasing numbers of older and very old residents
