Understanding Psychological Defense Mechanisms: Indirect Methods of Coping

This article explores various psychological defense mechanisms that individuals use to cope with uncomfortable emotions and thoughts. We discuss rationalization, projection, displacement, compensation, daydreaming, repression, suppression, denial, and withdrawal. Each mechanism is defined with examples to illustrate how people avoid confronting their true motivations or feelings. Understanding these mechanisms can foster greater self-awareness and improve interpersonal relationships by shedding light on the underlying reasons behind certain behaviors.

  6. Projection

  7. Placing blame Ex: “The teacher failed me because she doesn’t like me” rather than, “I failed because I didn’t do the work”

  8. Displacement

  9. Transferring feelings about one person to someone else Ex: Man goes home from work and yells at his wife and kids because he’s mad at his boss.
