Proposed Cuts Impacting Adult ESOL Programmes: A Call to Action for Public Education

The UCU campaign led by Jennie Turner and Melanie Cooke highlights imminent funding cuts threatening adult ESOL services. Key proposed changes include a 4.3% funding reduction for adults in 2011/12, the removal of programme weighting for ESOL and Literacy, and the end of funding for work-based ESOL. Learners will now face a rise in contributions to 50%, with many on “inactive” benefits losing fee remission. These cuts disproportionately affect women, learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, and may threaten over 60 jobs in the sector.
