  2. SALT • STORAGE CAPACITY • 8 Districts, 102 locations • Statewide – 92,170 tons • Average shed capacity 811 tons • Median shed capacity 400 tons

  3. Salt Storage • Heavy Timber Construction • 400 Ton typical capacity

  4. Salt Storage • 3,450 ton capacity with wings for brine maker and loader storage at Strang in S.E. Nebraska. • Several other locations have comparable buildings.

  5. Salt Storage • Concrete/Wood Dome • 13,200 ton capacity – Omaha, Gothenburg

  6. Salt Usage 50,000 tons were used to fight December Storms. Some locations ran out of salt. Managers were getting nervous!

  7. Salt Usage • Total ’07-’08 Contract purchases 115,364 tons • Delivered by truck from Kansas • Additional 1,500 tons by rail from Utah and Kansas. • 825 tons Ice Slicer was ordered to make up for salt shortage. • A new contract specification is being developed to address delivery issues. • Some fabric covered structures planned for this year to increase storage capacity.

  11. FAST • Added Vaisala Friction sensor to control existing manually controlled Spray System on I-80 near Kearney. • Surface temperature and wind speed sensor inputs are included in the algorithm.

  15. FAST 2008 • Three additional FAST systems are planned for I-80 bridges: • Shelton • Aurora • Giltner • Accident history is used to decide where FAST is justified.

  16. In 2007, NDOR joined the Pooled Fund MDSS

MDSS Highlights • Three Districts participated in the first season. • 34 routes in the system • 120 Users trained • Half-day intro in November • Two-hour hands-on sessions in January • Good receptivity to MDSS by users • Eight Iwapi AVL units in place. • Plan to add more districts, routes, users, and AVL units for next season
