  1. Research Experience for Undergraduates in Nanomaterials Ian Baker, Dartmouth College, DMR 0754256 The demand for materials with novel properties continues to climb at an ever increasing rate. As the demand for these materials grows, so does the demand for undergraduates and researchers with experience in these fields. In order for undergraduate materials science education to keep pace with the research and industry standards, education must expand and push the boarders of conventional classroom learning. This summer the five students participating in our program had the opportunity to contribute to advancing the state-of-the-art in either experimental or theoretical work in nanomaterials and nanotechnology. 2011 Participants: S. Dunbar, W. Klubben, E. Mason-Osann, E. Zeitchick, and K. Koo. Depicts a given single time point image of targeted and not targeted fluorescent dyes and their corresponding BP Maps.  Images taken on an Odyssey Scanner (LI-COR Biosciences, Lincoln, Nebraska), which is able to simultaneously image two fluorescent dyes.  BP Maps calculated pixel by pixel over time domain of 60 minutes. Research Experience for Undergraduates in Nanomaterials Ian Baker, Dartmouth College, DMR 0754256 The Nanomaterials REU program at Dartmouth College hosted five students during Summer 2011 and featured research in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Medicine. • Featured projects during 2011 included: • Comparison of Single Chain Variable Fragments with Fragment Antigen Binding Regions for Nanoparticle Targeting (E. Mason-Osann and Prof. Gerngross) • The Effect of Cellular Internalization and Non-Specific Binding on Quantifying Molecular Probe Targeting (W. Klubben and Prof. Pogue) • Material and Magnetic Characterization of Iron Core/iron Oxide Shell Nanoparticles(E. Zeitchick and Dr. Kekalo) • Synthesis and Oxidation Rate of Iron Core/Iron Oxide Shell Nanoparticles K. (Koo and Dr. Kekalo) • Molecular Imprinting of Carbon Nanotubes (S. Dunbar and Prof. BelBruno) • FUNDED BY THE DOD ASSURE PROGRAM • AND THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION 20 nm TEM image of Fe/Fe oxide nanoparticles prepared In a Toluene solution.
