  2. ALA Annual 2010 What’s new with MODS? • MODS 3.4 Schema released June 2010 • MODS/MADS Editorial Committee currently considering overall direction for MODS 4.0

ALA Annual 2010 Some changes in MODS 3.4 (1) • Support for RDA descriptions • <name type=“family”> • More values for the <issuance> element • Many new note types in User Guidelines • Better handling of subject vocabularies • Specify vocabulary at relevant <subject> subelements • Specify vocabulary used by URI • Specify term used by URI

ALA Annual 2010 Some changes in MODS 3.4 (2) • Better support for multilingual cataloging • Explicit indication of the script used in a resource • Ability to link translations and transliterations through a shared attribute • Expanded use of the lang, xml:lang, script and transliteration attributes • Expanded use of the usage attribute • Could be used to indicate main entry • Expanded use of the displayLabel attribute

ALA Annual 2010 Some changes in MODS 3.4 (3) • Ability to bind a specific name to a title to create a Uniform title • The ability to mark selected elements as containing cataloger-supplied data • Various changes to make the Schema itself more consistent, easier to manage and of greater utility to other applications importing elements from the MODS namespace
