  1. NEXANS HTSC CABLE ACTIVITIES in 2010

  2. Content The following activities are presented: • - The LIPA/LIPA 2 project • - Super3C project

  3. The LIPA project • Demonstration of Industrialized Transmission Class HTSC-cable • Project Manager: American Super Conductor • Customer: Long Island Power Authority • Nexans is the cable provider: • Nexans France: Development and Manufacturing End Terminations, Installing Cables • Nexans Deutchland Industries: Project Management, Testing, Modeling, Cryostat • Nexans Norway: Electrical Design, Manufacturing Test Lengths, Manufacturing Cable Core

  4. First Installation of a Transmission Voltage HTS Cable in the World LIPA Project Fact Sheet • Long Island Power Authority Electrical operating characteristics • Operating voltage/current – 138kV/2400A ~ 560 MVA • Design fault current – 51 kA @ 15 line cycles (250ms) • Physical characteristics • Installation – pipes • Length – ~ 600m • HTS tape length – 150km • Three individual cores in three cryostats • Hardware deliverables • Three ~ 600m long phase conductors • Six 161kV outdoor terminations • One 10kW refrigeration system at one end

  5. Copper Screen Layer HTSC Screen Layer Dielectric 2 HTSC Layers Former (Copper) The HTSC transmission class power cable • The 3 lengths were installed last year in Long Island • Passed the Voltage and Ampacity site tests and inserted into the grid.

  6. Results • Type testing according to IEC 60840, for the 145 kV transmission voltage level • No load cycle testing as the conductors do not get hot • Test voltage AC 190 kV/30 min • Pd measurements no Pd • Impuls voltage 650 kV + 10 impulses • Testing after installation according to IEC 60840 • Operational experience of two years • No electrical disturbances caused by the system • Stable operation performance

  7. The LIPA 2 project • Demonstration 2G YBCO HTSC Tapes in cable • Project Manager: American Super Conductor • Customer: Long Island Power Authority • Nexans is the cable provider: • Manufacturing test length to find production requirements with 2G tapes • Manufacture length with traditional design • Manufacture length with FCL properties • Develop field repair Joint • Install one length In addition to the existing lengths

  8. Super 3C project • An EU demonstration project • 13 participants from 6 countries • Demonstration project of industrialized production of HTSC cable based on YBCO CC material • Nexans is consortium leader • E.ON Energie is the Customer • Start: June 1, 2004 • Duration: 4 years • Deliverables: • Production of 2G high quality YBCO tape • Mass-production of YBCO tape • Industrialization of introduction of YBCO tape into a cable • Demonstration of long time properties of the cable • Delivery of 30 m MV cable for testing at Labein laboratory

  9. Participants • Nexans France, Overall project management • Zentrum für Funktionswerkstoffe Gemeinnützige • Nexans Norway • Nexans Deutchland Industries • Air Liquide • Instituto de Cienca de Materiale Barcelona • Fundacion Labein • Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Academy of Sciences • Nexans Superconductors • Tampere Technical University • E.ON Energie • E.ON Engineering

  10. Status • A test to find the handling properties was conducted. Results: The tapes are more vulnerable than 1.generation. Modification: Sandwich design • A dummy run with four HTSC 2. generation tapes were conducted, with the new sandwich design. Results: The tapes survived, the new design allows using 2. generation tapes • Manufacturing the YBCO tapes. Results: Low yield, • Testing at Labain: Results: All requirements fulfilled • Testing at Hannover: 3,2 kA, 8/16h cyckling according to IEC Thanks for yourattention
