  2. What is Alzheimer’s Disease? • Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of memory in the brain.

  3. Symptoms • Forgetfulness • Mild Confusion • Impacts your speech • Write coherently • Judgment Problem Solving

  4. How is it Diagnosed? • Can be diagnosed after death when an autopsy of the brain in performed. • The patient being diagnosed will get asked several questions by the doctor • Will get: laboratory, urine, blood test, and spinal fluid samples

  5. Causes • Scientist believe it is unlikely to identify the single cause of this disease. • It is a combination of inter-relater factors including genetic factors that are passes along family lines. • Lifestyle Factors

  6. Prevention • Vitamin E • Antioxidant • Donepezil

  7. Treatment Options? • There are currently no treatments for Alzheimer's disease, but there are medications to help control the symptoms.

Statistics • 14 million Americans will have AD by the middle of the next century, unless a cure or prevention is found. • Approximately 4 million Americans have AD • Alzheimer's disease is the third most expensive disease in the US after heart disease and cancer • One in ten persons over 65 and nearly half of those 85 have AD
