  2. PERSONAL BACKGROUND • Sole teacher at Deerfield Colony School for the past 11 years. • Part of Indian Education For All for many years.

Science Content Standard 1Students, through the inquiry process, demonstrate the ability to design, conduct, evaluate, and communicate the results and for reasonable conclusions of scientific investigations. Essential Understanding 3 The ideologies of Native traditional beliefs and spirituality persist into modern day life as tribal cultures, traditions and languages are still practiced by many American Indian people and are incorporated into how tribes govern and manage their affairs.

  4. GOAL for Science Horizons Initiative *Incorporate science into Indian Education For All . *Feel more confident teaching science in my classroom. *Increase students motivation in theclassroom . *Engage them with hands-on science investigations.

  5. TIMELINE • Initial lesson- 30 minutes • Objectives: Students will be able to… • Describe the process of germination. • Identify and describe the basic necessities and specific nutrients . • Collect, record and organize data. • Planting- 30 minutes • Observation- on-going

  6. MATERIALS • 2-child size swimming pools • Plants indigenous to Native Americans (corn, bean, squash • Rulers • Petri dishes • Potting soil • Fish tank with fish

  7. ACTIVITIES • Students plant an indoor garden • Germination of seeds • Observe the germination process • Students record their observations

  8. CROSS-CURRICULAR • Brings Science together with: • History • Math • Reading • Writing

  9. HYPOTHESIS Students will form a hypothesis about whether a fish will help plants grow taller.

  11. ASSESSMENT • After plant growth is complete, students will create a visual presentation that will describe the growth and development of each group of plants and share their conclusions with the class.
