  2. Guelph and Ghibellines Ghibelline Guelph • Medieval Italy • Supported Papacy • Against German Emporers • Main Goal: Pope to be in control • Medieval Germany • Against Papacy • Supported Holy Roman emperor and German emperors • Main Goal: Politically against Guelphs

  3. Guelphs • Florentine political party – Nationalist Party • Originated as followers as the Lombard League • Defended the urban communes liberties against the emperor’s invasions • Usually farmers, merchants • Two Divided Groups: The Neri (Blacks) & The Bianchi(Whites)

  4. Guelphs Division • The nephew of one branch of the Cancellieri family, threw a snowball at his uncle. • This caused his uncle to chastise him which later led to the nephew striking his uncle. • His uncle thought little of it, but the boy's cousin saw this and decided to cut off his cousin’s hands.

  5. Guelphs~ BIanchi • White • Followed Native roots- earth based • “Party of the Woods” • Violent fights banished both parties • White Guelphs returned • Supported neither emperor or pope

  6. Guelphs~ Neri • Blacks • Preferred traditional beliefs and class • Forced to remain in Exile (After white Guelphs returned) • Supported Pope over Emperor • Charles of Valois- support brought them back (sent by Pope)

  7. Ghibellines • Florentine political Party (opposite of the Guelphs) • Originated during the reign of Frederick Barbarossa (were his followers) • Usually noblemen, aristocratic • Farinata- general Ghibelline leader (In Inferno) • No separation • Emperor Frederick II

  8. Farinata • Considered to be hero and villain to Florence • Enemy to Dante’s ancestral party • Led to Guelph defeat- twice • Not included in political affairs • Still respect between Farinata and Dante

  9. Dante • White Guelph • Eventually became a Ghibelline • Emotional affiliations with Fatinata • Asked for both leaders to be banished • Criminal- wouldn’t pay fines (exile-died) • Avoided death sentence • Renounced all political partys
