Write From the Beginning Program Explicit and systematic Lessons I DO, WE DO, YOU DO Expectations by the end of 1st grade: *Stay on topic *Write 6-8 complete sentences using a main idea, supporting details, conjunctions and transitions *Spell correctly, use inventive spelling for complex spelling pattern. *Use correct grammar, writing is coherent and organized *Use expanded vocabulary pertaining to topic *Content has detail . *Use correct capitals, end marks, commas, quotations, spacing *Use the Writing Process independently *Apply Thinking Map to organize writing independently

11. Writing Expectation NowWriting is a process where there are milestones along the way that we expect students to master. (See journal) • Brainstorm 3 ideas • Organize using Thinking Map • Write 3 complete sentences using 1. Uppercase at the beginning of a sentence. 2. End mark 3. Inventive spelling ok (for now) except for commonly used sight words and CVC spelling patterns 4. Simple sentences to Complex sentences :Use “also”,“and” ,”but” and “because” 5. Include details My dog barks. My Chihuahua, Sparky, always barks at strangers.

12. Math CGI: Cognitive Guided Instruction My Math: MacGraw Hill Common Core: Explain how you solved the problem. Find other ways to solve it. 13. What is CGI? In CGI, teachers start with what children already know about math and build on it. • Children solve problems in ways that make sense to them using real-world contexts. • Multiple strategies are shared. • Children articulate their thinking and collaborate with others. • Students persevere through challenging problems. • Mistakes are opportunities for learning. • Conceptual understanding is the foundation, and progress to abstract representations of math concepts follow. • 19 children are taking a mini-bus to the zoo. They will have to sit either 2 or 3 to a seat. The bus has 7 seats. How many children will have to sit three to a seat, and how many can sit two to a seat?

DOK (see folder) It is a group of questions at different levels of cognitive ability, or depth of knowledge, required to complete the task. 3. Homework All of the following can be found on website. • Homework M-Th/ 20 min. and Reading is an additional 20 minutes • HW consisits of Letter to Student of the Week : Mondays 2 of the following : Language Arts or Math or Science or Social Studies Poem of the Week (Speaking grade) Spelling Words Writer’s Wednessday Book-It Reading Log starts October • Homework is checked for completion and will not be returned unless it is incomplete or incorrect. • Newsletters go home Monday • Book Reports: Winter and Spring Break • Buddy Visit: Journal (1 week per student) • Student of the Week poster given to student on Friday, return Monday. Homework club is 30 minutes: 2:15-2:45, Tuesdays 1:15-1:45

Assessments Tests are announced on homework cover sheet and on class website. • Benchmark Advance: Unit tests every 3 weeks on comprehension, reading fluency, phonics • Math: Unit tests after every chapter Addition & Subtraction Time Tests(2 min. 20 math facts) pass or retest (October) • Dibels: 3 quarterly tests: phonics, word segmentation, word reading, comprehension, fluency • Writing assessments: every 3 weeks • Science Tests: Tests for each unit

Grading Policy • 4- Demonstrates mastery above grade level standards • 3- On grade level, standards met/mastered • 2- Below grade level, standards not met • 1- no progress Writing Rubrics include 3 components: Genre (type of writing) Word Choice(organization,vocabulary, voice and style), Mechanics (spacing, punctuation ,capitals, spelling, grammar)

21. Low Grade NoticesSeptember 27 Who receives low grade notices? • Students with 2’s or 1’s in academic subjects, work habits, homework, or behavior • Low grade notices are sent home prior to Report Cards going home

Conference Week • Oct. 1- Oct. 5 • A Conference preference form will go home 2 weeks prior • Conference week Minimum Days 12:30pm, except Tuesday 1:10 • Parents have the opportunity to opt out of coming to a conference if your child is receiving a 3 or better in all areas • phone conference option
