  1. Classifying Quadrilaterals Chapter 6 Lesson 1

  2. Rectangle • A parallelogram with four right angles. • Opposite sides are parallel and the same length • Four right angles

  3. Square • A parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right angles • Four equal sides • Four right angles • Two pairs of parallel sides

  4. Parallelograms • A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel. • Two pairs of parallel sides • Two pairs of equal sides • Opposite angles are equal

  5. Rhombus • A parallelogram with four congruent sides • Two pairs of parallel sides • All sides are equal • Opposite angles are equal • The plural of rhombus is rhombi

  6. Trapezoid • A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides. • Isosceles trapezoid • A trapezoid whose nonparallel opposite sides are congruent.

  7. Kite • A quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides congruent and no opposite sides congruent.

  8. Example 1 • Judging by appearance classify the figure below.

  9. Example 2 • Judging by appearance, classify the figure in as many ways as possible.

  10. Example 3 • Judging by appearance, classify ABCD in as many ways as possible.

  11. Example 4 • Determine the most precise name for quadrilateral ABCD with vertices A(-3, 3), B(2, 4), C(3, -1), and D(-2, -2)

  12. Example 5 • Determine the most precise name for the quadrilateral with vertices Q(-4, 4), B(-2, 9), H(8, 9) and A(10, 4)

  13. Example 6 • Find the values of the variables for the kite.

  14. Example 7 • Find the values of the variables for the rhombus. Then find the lengths of the sides.

  15. Example 8 • In parallelogram RSTU, the measure of angle R is 2x – 10 and the measure of angle S is 3x + 50. Find x.

  16. Homework • Pg 290 # 7-16, 19, 20
