  1. 6.1 Classifying Quadrilaterals Chapter 6 Quadrilaterals

  2. 6.1 Classifying Quadrilaterals • What is a Quadrilateral?

  3. Parallelogram • Parallelogram: A Quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel

  4. Rhombus • Rhombus: A parallelogram with four congruent sides

  5. Rectangle • Rectangle: A parallelogram with four right angles

  6. Square • Square: A parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right angles (it is a rhombus and a rectangle)

  7. Kite • Kite: A quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides congruent and no opposite sides congruent

  8. Trapezoid • Trapezoid: A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides • Isosceles Trapezoid: Trapezoid with nonparallel sides congruent

  9. Quadrilaterals Quadrilateral Parallelogram Kite Trapezoid Rectangle Rhombus Isosceles Trapezoid Square

  10. Classifying Quadrilaterals • Judging by appearance, classify each quadrilateral in as many ways as possible: Parallelogram Quadrilateral Square Rectangle Rhombus Parallelogram Quadrilateral

  11. Classifying Quadrilaterals • Judging by appearance, classify each quadrilateral in as many ways as possible: Rhombus Parallelogram Quadrilateral Trapezoid Quadrilateral

  12. Classifying Quadrilaterals • Judging by appearance, classify each quadrilateral in as many ways as possible: Kite Quadrilateral Rectangle Parallelogram Quadrilateral

  13. Using Properties • Find the value of the variables for the kite: T JB = KB 2x + 4 = 3x - 5 x + 6 2y + 5 x = 9 -2x -2x 4 = x - 5 J K +5 +5 9 = x 3x - 5 2x + 4 JT = KT 2y = 10 2y + 5 = x + 6 y = 5 2y + 5 = 9 + 6 B 2y + 5 = 15 -5 -5

  14. Using Properties • Find the values of the variables for the rhombus: 5a + 4 = 3a + 8 3b + 2 -3a -3a 2a + 4 = 8 -4 -4 5a + 4 3a + 8 2a = 4 2 2 a = 2 4b - 2

  15. Using Properties • Find the values of the variables for the rhombus: a = 2 3b + 2 = 4b - 2 3b + 2 -3b -3b 2 = b - 2 +2 +2 5a + 4 3a + 8 4 = b b = 4 4b - 2

  16. Practice • Pg 290 1-12, 19-26 • Pg 292 37-42
