  18. Explain why there was so little progress in eliminating poverty in NC. • Many people believed people were poor because they did not work hard enough. • Most poverty programs did not address the issue of jobs. • In areas without well-paying jobs, even the best program did little to lift families out of poverty.

  19. Select one of the areas and summarize the advancements. • Health and Environment- U.S. Surgeon General warned the nation about the dangers of smoking, National Institute of Environmental Health Science to conduct research into health hazards, Environmental Protection Agency to study air pollution, pesticides. • Space Race and Air Travel- Landing a man on the Moon (Apollo 11), Boeing 747. • Computers and Research Triangle Park- Computer technology advanced rapidly, first video game, first personal computers, IBM established manufacturing site in the Research Triangle, UPC code.

  20. Describe how new laws allowed African Americans to take legal action. • Lawsuits involving civil rights could be heard in federal courts. • Federal courts were generally more supportive to civil rights complaints than southern state courts. • Employers who discriminated against African Americans and owners of segregated restaurants and stores could be sued. • African American workers could file complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and courts supported “affirmative action” policies that set aside a certain number of jobs for African Americans.
