  1. U.S./Canada • Free Market Economy- People are free to buy, sell, and produce whatever they want, with very little government involvement. • Two key groups- business owners and consumers • Business owners produce products that they can make a profit on, and consumers shop for best products at lowest prices. • This system has helped the U.S. and Canada build productive economies.

U.S./Canada • U.S. and Canada also support Free Trade-- or the removal of restrictions on goods moving in and out of the country. • NAFTA- North American Free Trade Agreement– U.S., Canada, and Mexico joined together to promise to take away most barriers to trade between the three countries. • Canada imports 60% of its imports from U.S • Canada exports 80% of its exports to U.S. • Canada is the largest trading partner of the U.S.- the second largest is Mexico.

U.S./Canada • Trade deficit- more imports than exports • Trade surplus- more exports than imports • U.S. spends hundreds of millions of dollars more on imports than it earns on exports. ***Is this a trade surplus or trade deficit? *** • Canada earns more from exports than it spends on imports.

U.S./Canada Environmental Issues • The U.S. and Canada face several environmental challenges. • Because we’re neighbors, some concerns are shared. • Air pollution from burning coal, oil and natural gas to power factories and run cars pollutes the air. • This can cause many environmental problems such as acid rain. • These issues are worst in the eastern areas of the countries that are the most populated.

U.S./Canada Environmental Issues --Global Warming- some scientist believe that pollution leads to warmer climates that could melt the polar ice caps, and raise sea levels.– This could potentially flood areas like Florida and NYC. * Both Canada and U.S. have passed laws to reduce the amount of fossil fuels that are burned to help slow global warming.*

U.S./Canada Environmental Issues --Changing climate has caused a higher demand for water for irrigation- causes water levels in Great Lakes to lower. --Lower water levels can decrease ability to ship, harm fish populations, and decrease tourism. -- Brownfields- places where old factories and gas stations have been abandoned and contain dangerous chemicals. --makes it difficult to develop anything new in its place. --Urban Sprawl- spread of human settlement into natural areas. -- puts strain on natural resources and destroys wide-open spaces/farmland.
