  1. IntroducingOur Next Unit! PREPARING & PRESENTING A SPEECH

  2. Everyone will prepare & present a speech • Special Opportunity for interested students – The Annual Rotary & District competition! • KLO participants will compete in each of their own English classes with a KLO Speak-Off Event (1-2 finalists per class), Thursday, April 17th in our library. • All other student speeches will be scheduled over longer period of time at each teacher’s discretion In English 7

  3. Have YOU gain a greater understanding of the importance of public speaking • Continue to develop your skills as a writer • Have you listen to and analyze a variety of speeches to gain insight into what makes an excellent speech • To collaborate English classes, as a learning community at KLO, to support students in reaching their individual potential as a public speaker Our Targets

  4. View examples of speeches BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

  5. ROTARY & SD23 PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST 2014

  6. The THEME for Rotary International for 2014 "Engage Rotary - Change Lives."

  7. While the theme provides the topic for the speech, YOU are responsible for doing your own research and tying in your information to the Rotary Club’s theme for 2014(if competing) See handout for ideashttps://www.rotary.org/en/document/898

  8. “Being a Rotarian is a commitment that goes far beyond just showing up at meetings once a week. • It means seeing the world, and our role in it, in a unique way. • It means accepting our communities as our responsibility, and acting accordingly: taking the initiative, making the effort, and doing what’s right, not what’s easy.”

  9. “All of us came to Rotary to get involved, and to make a difference. And in Rotary service, as in just about everything else in life, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. If you only put in a token effort, you won’t accomplish very much, and you won’t find very much satisfaction in what you do accomplish. But when you make the decision to truly engage Rotary — to bring Rotary service and Rotary values into every day of your life — that is when you start to see the incredible impact that you can have. That’s when you find the inspiration, the excitement, and the power to truly change lives. And no one’s life will be changed more than your own.”

  10. With all of the activity around our district and the province with ‘Me to We!” and dozens of other initiatives it shouldn’t be a difficult task. • Getting what you want to say into a 2-4 minute window is the challenge.

  11. Remember: a good speech might contain references to famous people and perhaps quotes. • However, a good speech is not someone else’s words (plagiarism) and is not like reading a story from a page.

  12. Historically funding for this event has come from The Rotary Club of Kelowna and SD #23 via the G/E funding. • Speeches must be between 2-4 minutes in length. Competitors will lose valuable points if their speech is less than 2 or more than 4 minutes. See judging sheets.

  13. Speeches need to be researched and written by Grade 6 or 7 students (students cannot use pre-written speeches or plagiarize) • Quotes can be used if credit is given to their owners. • Remember—there are two separate categories, one for grade 6 students and one for grade 7 students.

  14. Content: this rating is concerned with content in terms of quantity, relevance and adaptation. It is not concerned with the content in terms of accuracy. • It focuses on the specific things which are said. It is concerned with the amount of content related to the task, the relevance of the content to the task and the adaptation of the content to the listener and the situation.

  15. Organization: the organization rating focuses on how the content of the message is structured. It is concerned with the sequence and the relationships among the ideas in the message. • This is about how the student organizes the message, not what the student says.

  16. Language: this rating deals with the language which is used to convey the message. • It is concerned with grammar and choice of words. • Language is rated with respect to your ability to understand the message.

  17. Delivery: the delivery rating focuses on the transmission of the message. • It is concerned with volume, rate and articulation: with how a student speaks, not what the student says

  18. Time and Preparation: it is important that the speaker keeps the length of their speech within the 2-4 minute guidelines. • There are deductions for going under or over and the length of the speech grows more accurate with practice.

  19. Also, note that the appearance and grooming note refers to just that, we are not looking for fashion models but students who realize that appearance is part of a good presentation.

  20. 3” X 5” cue cards are permitted as support—no other props are allowed in the zone finals or the District finale. • Use of microphone is strongly encouraged. Zones and Finals use microphones

  21. Respective teachers judge their own students. Please use the standardized criteria sheet that is attached to this package. All judging via zones and finals use this form. • We are sharing judging criteria with YOU in advance so YOU know what is expected

  22. We will invite community celebrities to help judge our school’s contest. • Opportunities will be provided for a certain number of students per class to attend the KLO speak-off event

  23. Your school winners will compete in a zone speak off with the zone winners competing in the District Finals on April 28th, 2014 at the Creekside Theatre at GESS as part of The Rotary Club of Kelowna’s finale.
