  2. What do you eat in your packed lunch?

  3. If we were to look in the rubbish bin after lunch – what would we find? • Crisp packets? • Cling film? • Plastic bags? • Plastic bottles? • Juice cartons/pouches? • Wrappers? • Straws? • Paper napkins? • Food?

  4. Most of the waste in our packed lunch boxes is plastic. But what is plastic made from? Plastic is made from oil, often extracted from under the sea. • Oil is a non-renewable resource which means it will run out one day • Extracting oil has lots of negative impacts on the environment These images show oil rigs at work.

  5. Where does all this rubbish go?

  6. How long will our waste be in landfill? Food waste = 6 months to 1 year Cardboard = 2 years Plastic bottles = 450 years Plastic bags = 500 years Crisp packets/wrappers = 1,000 years

  7. Do your bit for the environment......Pack a waste free lunch! Q: What is a waste free lunch? A: A lunch which contains no throw away packaging or food

  8. Top tips to pack a waste free lunch! How?... • Use a durable lunchbox • Use reusable containers for food • Bring a refillable drinks bottle • Use cutlery that can be washed and used again • Use a washable cloth napkin • Eat fruit and veg – they come in their own natural packaging! • Think about portion sizes and pack what you’re going to eat

This week our school will be taking part in Waste Free LunchWeek This week our school will be taking part in Devon’s ‘Waste Free Lunch’ week We will be joining schools across Devon to reduce our waste and protect our environment If you have a packed lunch, every day this week, please try and bring one which makes no waste We are entering a competition and could win a prize worth up to £250. To do this we need to reduce our packed lunch waste and run a good campaign that involves the whole school community

What can you do? • Talk to the person who makes your packed lunch and ask them to help make a meal with as little rubbish as possible • Use the ‘top tips’ for good ideas • Sign up to our school pledge to make less waste • Get involved in poster campaigns, activities and competitions around school • Good luck everybody!
