Individual Development and Change module • Intended learning outcomes 5 - describe and evaluate human development and behaviour as influenced by social factors such as poverty, gender, culture, race and ethnicity and disability • Key transferable skills • To demonstrate oral communication skills in presenting and debating issues in seminar groups • to make use of IT in using online resource

Content : Syllabus outline • Development of ethnic identity (theoretical models of ethnic identity – Phinney and Cross), research studies on ethnic identity, threats to identity, importance of identity and application in Nursing and Social work practice • Death and dying – cultural and religious beliefs

  5. Content : Syllabus outline • Understanding and analysing human behaviour in social context ; human diversity

  6. Teaching and Learning Approach • Lecture presentation on definitions, developmental process, theoretical models and application to 2 case scenarios- an African child in care, wanting to be placed with just white families and a boy of mixed parentage experiencing bullying by black boys in his new school. • “Bring, show and tell” – each student to bring 3 items, to show and tell the seminar group how the items expresses their ethnic identity.

  7. Items bought in • Clothing – cheongsam, football shirt, computer image of African tribal dress, Arabic headscarf and Indian shoes • Foodstuff – beer, gravy granules, dried fish

  8. Evaluation of the seminar 5 areas of learning :- • about their peers and • about themselves, • issues encountered in their preparation and why did they think they occurred, • application in practice setting and • effectiveness of the bring, show and tell method of learning

Teaching and Learning Approach : Death and Dying • Presentation • Seminar • Words we use to describe death - Describe how the following cultures deal with death, in terms of care of the body, rites and rituals, beliefs relating to death and dying and afterlife. • Christians • Muslim • Hindu • Chinese • Jewish • Sikh

  10. An example : Chinese culture • Importance of ancestor worship • Funeral attire and behaviour • Burning of “Hell money” and effigies • Gates of Hell
