  7. Psychological Disorders What Are Psychological Disorders? Psychological Disorder - Clinically significant behavioral or psychological pattern that is associated with: 1. distress (e.g., psychological pain, anxiety, or depression) 2. disability or maladaptive behavior–significant impairment in one or more areas of psychological functioning, especially the ability to work and to get along with others. 3. increased risk of suffering disability, pain, or death 4. loss of freedom or personal control

Many people suffering from mental disorders also: • Often violate social norms (generalized expectations regarding appropriate behavior in a given situation). • Vary in number depending on the society in which they live. • Are diagnosed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. • Are stigmatized (negatively labeled) by others. Many of today’s homeless are people with mental disorders.
