  1. Digital Detectives Lesson 4: Manipulating Sound

  2. Introduction • Last lesson we learned how to manipulate/fake images. Sounds can be manipulated or faked, too. • READ the Introduction and Step 4.1 on page 7 of your Student Book.

  3. Objectives • Know that information can be presented and manipulated in a variety of ways, and that this can lead to misunderstanding or deception • Understand how to edit pre-recorded sounds • Be able to manipulate sound using Audacity in a variety of different ways

  4. Starter (5 mins) • Listen to the three sound files (CD Resource 4a). Can you spot the difference between the recordings?

  5. Audacity Demo (2 mins) • Import sound files • Cutting & Pasting sound

  6. Task 1 (in pairs) – 10 mins • Complete Step 4.2 and 4.3, remembering to save your sound file! Mix up the route, by editing the recording and cutting & pasting the place names. Follow the instructions in your book carefully.

  7. Task 2 (in pairs) – 5 mins • Listen to CD Resource 4b – File Intercept 2. • Why does it sound strange? • How has it been changed? • Use the Effect Tool to change the sound back to its correct version.

  8. Task 3 (in pairs) – 10 mins • Complete Step 4.6. This task allows you to explore the ability to change pitch in Audacity. Listen to CD Resource 4b – File Intercept 3. • Why does it sound strange? • How has it been changed? • Use the Pitch Control to change the pitch so that you can understand the message.

  9. Extension • Try Step 4.7. • Experiment with some of the other effects and create another sound file that is disguised in some way.

  10. Glossary Terms • Define the following terms in your ICT Dictionary: Pitch Waveform Echo Reverse
