In this lesson of Digital Detectives, students will explore image manipulation techniques using various graphics tools to edit bitmapped images. They’ll learn to differentiate between bitmap and vector images, understanding how each format affects image quality, particularly when resizing. Key skills developed include cropping, selection, retouching, cloning, and using text tools. Hands-on tasks will encourage creativity as students manipulate images and identify techniques used by classmates. A glossary of essential terms like pixel, bitmap, vector, and clone will deepen understanding.

Digital Detectives Lesson 3: Image Manipulation
Objectives • Know how to use a range of graphics tools to edit bitmapped images • Understand the difference between bitmap and vector images • Be able to edit digital images using a variety of tools and techniques
Starter • See if you can spot the difference between these two images when they are resized.
Starter • See if you can spot the difference between these two images when they are resized.
Vector images vsBitmap images • Vector images store the lines, shapes and colours of an images as mathematical formulae. When you enlarge a vector image, the formulae work out the new sizes and shapes, so there is no loss of quality. • Bitmap images are made up of millions of squares called pixels. • They have a fixed image resolution, and if you try and enlarge them you will lose picture quality.
Fireworks Demonstration • Cropping • Selection Tools • Retouching • Cloning/Stamping • Text Tool
Task 1 (15 mins) • Open CD Resource 3a • Using some of the techniques you have been shown, work through Steps 3.3 to 3.7.
Task 2 (15 mins) • Open CD Resource 3b • Using a range of techniques, manipulate some of the images in CD Resource 3a. • Swap seats with your neighbour and identify the techniques he/she has used, and identify the clues! Record these on CD Resource 3b.
Glossary Terms • Define the following terms in your ICT Dictionary: Pixel Bitmap image Vector image Image resolution Clone tool Layer
