  2. Lymphatic System Chapter 23, Section 3

  3. Objectives • What is the function of the lymphatic system? • What are the parts of the lymphatic system?

  4. What is the lymphatic sytem? *The lymphatic system is the group of vessels, organs, and tissues that collects excess fluid and returns it to the blood. The lymphatic system also helps your body fight pathogens. *It is composed of: lymph capillaries, lymph vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, the thymus, and the spleen,

  5. Vocabulary • lymph capillaries-smallest vessels that carry fluid collected by the lymphatic system (can include dead cells or pathogens) • lymph vessels-larger vessels of the lymphatic system • lymph nodes- small masses of tissue that remove pathogens and dead cells from lymph • lymph-fluid and particles absorbed by the lymph capillaries

  6. Lymph vessels and capillaries

  7. Vocabulary cont…. 5. Bone marrow-soft tissue inside bones that makes red and white blood cells 6. lymphocytes-white blood cells part of the lymphatic system that fights infection 7. thymus-located just above the heart, where T cells develop further after the bone marrow 8. spleen-largest lymphatic organ, located in abdomen, stores lymphocytes, fights infection, destroys old blood cells

  8. Lymph System In Body Draw the picture and label the: Spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and tonsils Spleen Lymph vessel

  9. More Vocabulary 9. tonsils- lymphatic tissue at the back of the mouth

  10. In-Class Questions • How do the lymphatic and circulatory systems work together? • Work with a partner to list (in order) how fluid flows from the cardiovascular system to the lymphatic system (after reading the section) • Sometimes you can easily feel your lymph nodes when they are swollen. If you had swollen lymph nodes, what could you infer?

  11. Homework 10/28 1. How does the lymphatic system fight infection? 2. Complete the Process Chart below to show how fluid travels between the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system. Plasma is pushed out of capillaries. 2. 3. 4. 3. What are three things that can be found in lymph? 4. Why is it important that lymphatic tissue is spread throughout the body?

  12. Warmup: October 29, 2013 Name and describe three functions of the lymphatic system.

  13. Warmup 10/31 Describe (without notes) using all the vocabulary words, the passageway air takes to get into the lungs…. (at least 8 vocab words)
