Concussions in Professional Sports • A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, most commonly occurring in contact sports. • Concussions in professional sports have not been studied until recently, in which all North American Sport Leagues have adopted necessary procedures to managing them correctly.

Concussions in Professional Sports • The result of receiving multiple concussions has been linked to the brain disease CTE. “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a degenerative brain disorder linked to memory loss, depression and dementia,” according to an article on the ESPN website. • Brain specialists at Boston University recently conducted a study examining brain tissue from 85 people with a history of repetitive brain trauma from various professional sports. • The researchers have confirmed 50 cases of former football players with CTE along with four NHL players; further connecting contact sports to long-term brain disease.

  6. Most Recently • Hall of Fame linebacker, Junior Seau, disputed as one of the best to ever play his position committed suicide last May. • Seau’s brain was donated and examined in which it was confirmed Seau suffered from CTE.

  8. The Future • Some believe the NFL will not be around in 30 years, others believe there must be a dramatic reform in the way in which the game is played. • The statistics speak for themselves, change is needed.
