  2. The characters in both these stories feel compelled to move and discover. An equal number, however, long to root and nurture. • Both of these are American impulses. • Example: Stay or Go?

  3. What are examples of restlessness and rootedness? • Restlessness is shown vividly in the descriptions of the wild race of cars rushing north and Hernando’s memories of obnoxious tourists. In the crashed car and the items (the tires and hub lid) flung off of racing vehicles (which, significantly, Hernando uses for shoes and a bowl) The car full of distressed young people trying desperately to get home is also an image of restlessness. The Highway

  4. What are examples of rootedness? • All of the descriptions of Hernando at his work. His intimate ties to the land and other animals fix him in place and suggest a timelessness that is accented by his slow and purposeful actions, his wooden plow, and his wife grinding corn. The HIghway

  5. What are examples of restlessness? • Captain Hart is the ultimate spokesperson for restlessness. His cynicism and endless search. The Man

  6. What are some examples of rootedness? • Rootedness is evident in descriptions of The Man himself. Martin’s decision to stay put, and Captain Hart’s own admission that what he is really seeking is a little peace and quiet. The man
