  3. All courses: • regulated under Ontario Regulation 176/10 • accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers • will be entered on the candidate’s certificate of qualification • degree credit courses • count toward Advanced Bachelor’s Degree in Education • may count for pay grid movement

  4. Nipissing In-Service Program • Over 5,000 registrations per year • Equivalent of over 1,000 full-time students • Over 250 instructors • Among largest programs in the province • Office located at the Monastery Hall campus

  5. Additional Basic Qualifications • Additional Basic Qualification courses are courses that lead to qualification in a division beyond the two that are part of your BEd program • Primary ABQ • Junior ABQ • Intermediate ABQ (various teachable electives) • Senior ABQ (various teachable electives)

  6. Additional Qualification Courses • Focus in on specific areas to expand on qualifications • One session and Three-session courses • Three-session courses lead to specialist designation (e.g., Special Education, ESL, FSL, Guidance, Cooperative Education, Visual Arts, Reading, etc.)

Modes of Delivery • Face-to-Face • May/June Intersession – North Bay or Brantford campuses • 8 areas across Ontario • Area Coordinator in each location • Brantford/Waterloo, North Bay/Parry Sound, Renfrew County, Sault Ste. Marie, Simcoe/Muskoka, Sudbury, Timmins, York Region • Spring, Summer, Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring

Primary ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades JK - 3 To support appropriate strategy selection and development for students in Grades JK to 3 Practicum: The Practicum Component of the course is organized by candidates and designed to create an opportunity for practical applications of ideas introduced in the course. Practicum information (sign off) is provided to thecourse director on completion, before the course is credited to the candidate.

Junior ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades 4-6 To support appropriate strategy selection and development for students in Grades 4 to 6 Practicum: The Practicum Component of the course is organized by candidates and designed to create an opportunity for practical applications of ideas introduced in the course. Practicum information (sign off) is provided to thecourse director on completion, before the course is credited to the candidate.

Intermediate ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades 7-10 and extend the skills and knowledge for teaching in the intermediate division and of a subject-specific intermediate division program. One half of the course (the elective) concentrates on specific content for one teaching subject. Course composed of a Core component (50%) and an elective component (50%). Core component includes Methods, Special Education, as well as a minimum of 2 hours in Language Arts, Math, Music, HPE, History, Geography, and Science. Practicum: The Practicum Component of the course is organized by candidates and designed to create an opportunity for practical applications of ideas introduced in the course. Practicum information (sign off) is provided to the course director on completion, before the course is credited to the candidate.

Senior ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades 11 and 12 and extend the skills and knowledge for teaching in the senior division and of a subject-specific senior division program. One half of the course (the elective) concentrates on specific content for one teaching subject. Course composed of a Core component (50%) and an elective component (50%). Core component includes CDE, Ed & Schooling and Special Ed. Practicum: The Practicum Component of the course is organized by candidates and designed to create an opportunity for practical applications of ideas introduced in the course. Important Information • Students arrange their own practicum • Payment is due at the time of registration • Scheduling for Intermediate and Senior ABQ courses may involve evening classes – PLAN FOR THIS • There may be one or more Fridays with classes scheduled • Course schedules and rooms are not finalized until late April when exact student numbers are known • June courses are scheduled around convocation • Do not request that you be in the same section as a friend – we assign course sections and do not accommodate special requests

Distance Education Courses • Completed independently at home(must meet assignment deadlines) • On-line or print correspondence delivery • Experienced part-time instructors • Longer completion time than on-site • Other students in the course may be experienced teachers • Count toward future AdEd degree • Cannot be fast-tracked

Special Education Practicum - Distance • You are required to spend a minimum of 24 hours of work with 2 or more students with different identified exceptionalities • 12 of these 24 hours are used for observation • You will be asked to apply your observations in course assignments • You can arrange your own practicum at a local school but you can only begin your practicum after the course start date • Necessary (downloadable) forms are available on class Blackboard once the course begins • Other summer options include: summer school, summer camps, daycare facilities, neighbours, family members, etc. • If you are unsure about the suitability of a practicum setting, check with your instructor

  30. Admission RequirementsABQ Senior or Intermediate • Current BEd student in good standing (in either the P/J or J/I divisions) • Teachable subjects as required for the Intermediate or Senior divisions • Application with the Ontario College of Teachers is in-progress

  32. Teachable Subject Requirements - Intermediate • Intermediate ABQ-requires three full undergraduate courses in one subject • Must check your teachable eligibility with the Office of the Registrar before registering

  34. Registration Requirements • Students must login to WebAdvisor and enter their OCT number prior to registration • Teachable eligibility must be confirmed before you will be able to register • E-mail the Office of the Registrar at registrar@nipissingu.cafrom your student e-mail account

  35. Registration Requirements • Distance Courses – registration begins March 1 • On-Site Courses – registration begins March 8 • Courses are subject to space limitations • Courses depend on a minimum enrolment. Courses with insufficient enrolment may be cancelled.

  36. Registration Process • Registration is done through WebAdvisor. System won’t allow registration unless you have entered your OCT number on the system prior to registration (login to Webadvisor, go to Teacher or Masters Students menu, click on Register OCT number). • The system won’t allow you to register for Intermediate or Senior ABQ courses if you have not checked your eligibility with the Office of the Registrar

  37. Registration Process • Any changes to your registration must be made through WebAdvisor • Non-payment of fees, non-attendance or telling the professor is NOT considered an official withdrawal • Withdrawals from courses must be made through WebAdvisor

  38. Registration Process • Prior to the first class, students who are deemed to be in poor academic standing will be de-registered from any ABQ or AQ courses that they register for

  39. Fees • Provide your credit card information when registering on-line, or • If paying by cheque or cash, fees must be paid to the Finance Office within two days of registration • Course fee – to be determined

  40. Reporting Course Results • Grade available on WebAdvisor • University Transcript sent to you • Reported by university to OCT in late August • Recorded by OCT on your Certificate of Qualification (will not be on the first certificate that you receive) • Must be an OCT member to record your course
