Contents • Science behind Nuclear Energy • Efficiency • Korea’s Example • France’s Example • Pros and Cons
Science behind Nuclear Energy • Basis is nuclear fission • When a neutron(s) is bombarded to a radioactive substance (i.e Uranium) the substance splits into smaller pieces and emits energy • Chain reaction occurs • The amount of energy emitted is calculated through E =mc2 • The key is to control the chain reaction
Efficiency • The fuel (radioactive materials) is inexpensive • Scientifically well developed • Easy to transport power • No greenhouse or acid rain effects • 5 cents per kilowatt-hour (way cheaper compared to fossil fuel)
Korea’s Example • First plant built in 1978 (Gori Plant) • In total there are 20 nuclear power plants • Supplies 45% of total electric consumption • Reason of usage: scarce natural resources
France’s Example • 75% of electricity produced is from nuclear power plants • Electricity cost is the lowest among Europe • Largest net exporter of electricity • Gains over 3 billion € per year • Manages 59 plants • Has plans for new generation of Nuclear power plants
Pros and Cons for nuclear energy • Does not produce gaseous emissions • Technology readily available compared to other alternatives (i.e solar energy) • Generates high amount of electricity from single plant • Chances of radioactive contamination • Safety issues (Chernobyl, Three Mile Island) • Nuclear waste causes long range problems • Preferred targets for terrorists Pros Cons
