  2. Who was in the army? Pt. 1 • Only men could be in the Roman Army • Had to be a Roman citizen • He had to be at least 20 years old. • Is not supposed to get married while in the army

  3. Who was in the army? Pt. 2 • Most soldiers came from countries outside Italy • There were soldiers from Africa, France, Germany, Spain and the middle east • Soldiers had to stay in the army for at least 25 years

  4. What roman soldier's wore • Sandals with iron studs on leather soles • Iron helmets • Chain mail armour • Braccae (Trousers) • Soldiers were free to use armour handed down by family member, or buy from soldiers who had completed their service

How many soldiers were in the army? • There were approximately 150,000 soldiers in the Roman Army • The Roman Army was made up of groups of soldiers called Legions • Each Legion had about 5000 soldiers • There were about 30 legions, of the 30 legions three were based in Britain at Caerleon, Chester and York

Greatest Roman Army General • Julius Caesar was probably the most famous Roman to ever live. • He was a great politician, writer, statesman, and a genius military general • Caesar joined the army in 85 BC following the sudden death of his father, receiving the Civic Crown for his service in an important siege. •  Caesar was almost killed in his 20s when Lucius Cornelius Sulla became dictator of Rome in 82 BC, he quickly began eliminating his enemies by either execution or exile
