The Spanish Armada: Why Did Spain Attack England in 1588?

In 1588, Spain launched the Spanish Armada against England, driven by a mix of political, religious, and economic motives. King Philip II aimed to restore Catholicism in England after Queen Elizabeth I's rejection of his marriage proposal. Amidst English support for the Dutch rebels and piracy as "Sea Dogs" stole Spanish wealth, the Armada's plan faltered due to poor organization, superior English naval tactics, and weather. The result was devastating for Spain: half of the fleet lost, a significant number of troops killed, and a crucial psychological shift in the balance of power towards England.
