  2. Globalization • Mirriam-Webster defines globalization: • to make worldwide in scope or application. • Another definition of globalization might be the integration of economies and societies. • Globalization is also seen in the emerging world information order.

  3. Globalization • What exactly is globalization in the context of LIS?

  4. World’s Fair Metaphor • Historian Robert Rydell at LITA • Globalization is a new word • Just “an old wine in a new bottle” • “Primary sites for learning about the world not just places to have fun”

Global Courses in LIS • Natural progression – proliferation of global context courses in LIS curriculum since it has been determined that Melvil Dewey got the idea for his decimal classification system from the scheme used to arrange the exhibitions at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

DDC • Everything at the Centennial was classified by department: • Mining and Metallurgy • Manufactures • Education and Science • Art • Machinery • Agriculture, and Horticulture) • Then subclassified, and further subclassified in a logical scheme that later became a model for the Dewey Decimal System.
