Aims • To be aware of the key principles of the new Curriculum for Excellence Framework. • To gain familiarity with the new curricular areas and different stages of learning.  • To identify opportunities and challenges created by the new Framework.  • To identify priorities and agree action to prepare for the introduction of Curriculum for Excellence.

Activity 2: Introductory videos Possible questions • What are the main changes or innovations described by the various speakers in these films? • To what extent does this reflect your own perceptions or experiences of Curriculum for Excellence?  • Is it possible to identify a common or unifying theme emerging from these personal perspectives about Curriculum for Excellence?

Activity 2: Summary of key points • Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) represents transformational change in our education system.  • CFE will increase the professional autonomy of schools and teachers.  • CFE provides much greater flexibility in curriculum design.  • CFE will help school meet the needs of all learners more effectively.  • CFE embraces the best practice in learning and teaching,  • CFE provides more relevance and coherence in children’s learning experiences.

Activity 2: Summary of key points (continued) • CFE is less about what children are learning, and more about how they are learning.  • CFE provides more opportunities for personal learning and personal achievement.  • CFE promotes learning that is more active, more collaborative and more interdisciplinary.  • CFE is a licence to do things differently, and to do them better.

Activity 3: Experiences and outcomes Possible Questions: • What are the most significant differences between Curriculum for Excellence and previous curricular arrangements?  • What is your reaction to the way that the new framework is presented – ie, described in learning experiences and outcomes? How do you envisage these being used by teacher and learners? Is there anything fundamentally new in this approach?   • What do you see as the main opportunities and challenges created by the new Curriculum for Excellence framework?

Activity 3: Summary of key points • Curriculum for Excellence will give all children and young people the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in 8 broad curricular areas. • These curriculum areas set out the experiences and outcomes that will help all learners to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work. • Enterprise, citizenship, international education and creativity themes are embedded within into each of the different curriculum areas.

Activity 3: Summary of key points (continued) • Curricular areas should integrate to provide more opportunities for cross-curricular, thematic and interdisciplinary learning. • There are 5 levels or stages within Curriculum for Excellence. • Schools have a lot more flexibility to plan and experience learning in a range of different ways.
