  5. OPENINGS • The Scandinavian • The Danish Gambit • The Scotch • The Petroffs Trap • The Icelandic Gambit Back to contents

  6. SCANDINAVIAN The Scandinavian is an opening for black which gives great control of the centre this is good in the opening because it gives you a better outpost to attack from later. Back to contents

  7. THE DANISH GAMBIT Back to contents The Danish gambit is an interesting opening that goes against some of the principals of chess. First you give up the centre very early on and keep sacrificing pawns eventually you will be able to move your bishops if you develop them onto the left side of the board you will have created a very powerful attack on their kingside.

  8. THE SCOTCH The scotch looses a tempo in the opening but do not be put off as it gives great control of the centre. If you do not want to play the scotch Mabey try the basic opening called the petroffs trap. Back to contents

  9. THE PETROFS TRAP If you don’t want to play the scotch then maybe you want to play the petroffs trap, if your opponent falls for the petroffs trap then you will have a great chance of capturing their queen early on in the game. Back to contents

  10. THE ICELANDIC GAMBIT The Icelandic gambit can be used to follow up the Scandinavian if they do not play the correct response after you have moved you knight. This advanced follow through can win your opponents queen if they do not respond correctly. Back to contents

  11. END GAMES • Introduction • King And Pawn • King And Rook • King And Queen Back to contents

  12. INTRODUCTION • Endgames are when most of the pieces have been taken and there are only a few pieces left on the board. In the following examples you will learn how to queen pawns and much more.

  13. KING AND PAWN The objective of this endgame is to keep the king as far in front of the pawn as possible. This creates a barrier so that you r opponents king cannot capture your last pawn. Whites pawn is now a queen Back to contents

  14. KING AND ROOK Back to contents With a king and a rook the rook acts as an electric fence so that the opponents king cannot advance up the board. Then you try to position your king opposite your opponents. When this position has been reached check the opponents king with your rook. This forces the king backwards. Repeat the process until you have achieved check mate.

  15. KING AND QUEEN Back to contents With a king and a queen you can use the box method to limit the number of squares that your opponents king can go to. Eventually you will come to a position where the king is in the corner and it has only two squares that it can move back and forth on now is the time to bring your king in. To finish the game you have to get your queen next to your opponents king so that it can’t move with your king protecting the queen.

  16. TACTICS • Pins • Forks • Skewers Back to contents

  17. PINS Back to contents In this position blacks queen cant move because it would be check the only move that it can play is taking the rook. When a piece cant move because it would be placing the king in check and this is illegal in a game of chess.

  18. FORKS A fork is when you attack two of your opponents pieces at the same time and if one of the pieces moves the other is captured, the most powerful forks involve a check. Back to contents

  19. SKEWERS A skewer is a forcing tactic to win opponents pieces in the endgame. It happens when a king is in front of a more valuable piece. If in this position you checked blacks king then it would have to move out of the way loosing a queen. Back to contents
