  1. The Great Gatsby Review Chapters 1-5

  2. Chapter 1Track 1: “Glamorous” by Fergie • It is 1922 and Nick Carraway has just moved to New York to work as a bondsman. Nick makes it a point to tell us that he is moral and does not make judgments about people. Soon after arriving to New York, Nick visits the home of Tom and Daisy Buchanan. During this reunion, we learn that Tom is a racist and that he has physically harmed Daisy. When Nick returns home, Nick finds Gatsby reaching out towards a green light.

  3. Chapter 2Track 2: “Creep” by TLC In chapter 2, Tom and Nick pick up Myrtle Wilson, who we learn is Tom’s current mistress. The three of them head to Tom and Myrtle’s apartment uptown New York. Myrtle hosts a little party where everyone gets drunk (including Nick). Myrtle and Tom get into an argument that ends with Myrtle having a broken nose.

  4. Chapter 3Track 3: Blame it on the Alcohol by Jamie Foxx Gatsby sends over his butler to invite Nick to one of his parties. Nick decides to go to the party, and while there he meets Owl Eyes, and listens to the many rumors started by the twins in the yellow dresses. Nick finds Jordan and they begin to talk, when a mysterious man approaches. He and Nick begin to discuss being in the war, and it is soon revealed that this mysterious man is none other than Jay Gatsby.

  5. Chapter 4Track 4: Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses After the party, Nick and Gatsby begin to spend more time together. In this chapter specifically, they head to New York together (to have lunch) and Gatsby begins to share his past with Nick. Pay close attention to things Gatsby shares about his past. When they arrive in the City, they have lunch with a man named Meyer Wolfsheim who may have some underground business connections. After lunch, Jordan and Nick meet and discuss Daisy’s and Gatsby’s past. We learn that Daisy and Gatsby were once lovers before he was sent off to war, and felt pressured to marry Tom. Jordan then tells Nick that Gatsby would like for him to arrange a meeting at his house. He wants Nick to invite Daisy over so that she can see Gatsby’s house.

  6. Chapter 5Track 5: “What goes around/Comes Around” by Justin Timberlake Nick has agreed to arrange the meeting between Jay and Daisy. On the day of the meeting, it is raining, and Gatsby is extremely anxious about reuniting with Daisy. Once she arrives, both are nervous, but after some time passes, it seems that they are back where they started 5 years ago. Jay shows Daisy his home and she is quite fascinated with his wealth. However, when it is time to leave, Gatsby has some doubts about Daisy.

  7. Introduction to Chapter 6 Answer the following question: Can you repeat the past?

  8. Chapter 6 Questions • What is Gatsby’s real history? Where is he from? • What did Dan Cody do for Gatsby? • What is Daisy’s opinion of Gatsby’s party? How does this affect him? • What does Gatsby mean by his fierce reaction to Nick’s statement about not repeating the past?
