  3. Background to the 2010 PHC The 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) of Ghana followed the essential features of a modern Population and Housing Census as recommended by the United Nations. This is the fifth census conducted after independence and the second time a population census has been combined with a housing census. The 2010 PHC was in reference to 26th September, 2010 (Census Night). 10/9/2014

  4. Background to the 2010 PHC (Cont’d) A ‘de facto’ count approach was adopted. Thus, all persons who were found within the borders of Ghana on Census Night, irrespective of their nationality and status were enumerated. All residential structures (both occupied and unoccupied) were also counted. 10/9/2014

  9. Total Population • The provisional results of the 2010 PHC show that the total population of Ghana is 24,223,431. • There are 11,801,661 males and 12,421,770 females. • This suggests that males make up 48.7 percent of the population while females constitute 51.3 percent.

  12. Sex Ratio • The provisional results for 2010 also indicate that females outnumber males. There are 95 males per 100 females. • Across regions, the sex ratio ranges between 90 in the Central region and 104 in the Brong Ahafo region.

  15. Population Share • Ashanti (19.5%) and Greater Accra (16.1%) constitute 35.6 percent of the total population. • Compared with 2000, this proportionate share of the population has increased by 1.1 percentage points from 34.5 percent.

  18. Growth Rate declining but still high • Overall, Ghana’s population has increased by 28 percent. The Northern region recorded the largest increase of 36 percent, followed by Greater Accra, Central and Ashanti regions with 35, 32 and 31 percent respectively. • The annual intercensal rate of growth for the country has declined from 2.7 percent in 2000 to 2.4 percent in 2010. The growth rate for Greater Accra was 2.8 percent. The least growth rate of 1.1 percent was recorded in the Upper East Region.

Summary • Ghana’s population has increased by 28.1 percent from 18,912,079 in 2000 to 24,223,431 in 2010. • The recorded annual intercensal growth rate in 2010 is 2.4 percent. • Females outnumber males in all regions. The overall sex ratio is 95. • Greater Accra (16.1%) and Ashanti (19.5%) regions have the greater share of the population. • Population density has increased from 79 in 2000 to 102 in 2010.
