  2. A. Powerful New Kingdoms (after Sargon) • Other Mesopotamian cities begin to expand • 400 miles north of Sumer the city of Ashur grows in power • Shared in the customs of Mesopotamia – especially: • Cuneiform • Farming – mostly barley & cattle

  3. A. Powerful New Kingdoms (after Sargon) • To the south Babylon began to unite the Sumerian cities • Hammurabi built dams across the Euphrates • This controlled the water flow & could cause flooding or drought

  4. A. Powerful New Kingdoms (after Sargon) • Hammurabi controls all of Meso. By 1750 B.C. • Because it was centered at Babylon we call it the Babylonian Empire • Many trade goods passed through the capital making it very wealthy

  5. B. The Laws of Hammurabi • The Code of Hammurabi was discovered in 1901 • It contained 282 laws in cuneiform • Tells us much about the values of the people • Was found in all of the cities of the empire • Look on pg. 68 for examples • Does anything seem familiar? • Does any of it seem unfair?

  6. This is a modern day photo of Susa ( now called Khuzestan in Southern Iraq) the city in which the stela on the right was found with Hammurabi’s Code written on it. The stela is now in Louvre, a museum in Paris.

  7. C. A Time of War • After Hammurabi’s death the empire weakens • Cities he conquered took advantage – Ashur and Nineveh are among the 1st to break away • Assyrians conquered all of Babylon & more • From Egypt, to the Persian Gulf , to modern Turkey

  8. C. A Time of War • The Assyrians used new techniques • Chariots • Battering rams • Siege towers • Prisoners of war became slaves • Assyrian women still had no rights

  9. D. Assyrian Culture • The Assyrians respected the Babylonians culture • Same religion • Same customs • They collected all they could and kept it in a library in Nineveh • Built one of the 1st aqueducts and improved on other Babylonian inventions and ideas

Assyrian Culture • When the Babylonians revolted the Assyrian king had Babylonian temples destroyed and the city flooded • The Babylonians fought back destroying Nineveh -Assyria lost power and never recovered • Babylon regains power for a little while (but they were actually ruled by a people called the Chaldeans at this time)
