  8. The National Curriculum The National Curriculum aims to: • provide pupils with a balanced and broadly based curriculum. • promote their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development. • prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Numeracy (Maths) • Follow New National Numeracy Strategy. • Numeracy Passport to speed up mental maths. • Working on an ability to calculate mentally from very early years . • Four hours a week. • Emphasis on working out facts that are known by heart to figure out new facts. • Emphasis on choosing quickest methods & understanding them, not just rote learning. • Being able to explain methods & say why particular ones have been used. • Need to know by heart: Number bonds One more, one less Doubles/halves • Problem solving.

  11. Literacy • Handwriting – Penpals • Phonics groups based on ‘Read, Write, Inc’ • Guided reading • BIG Writing (VCOP) • Literacy targets • We have 1 hour Literacy sessions working in 3 groups (Daily routine)

How can parents help? • Read daily with your child. • Sign the reading diary – needed in order to change books! • Help your child to work on Numeracy passport. • Be aware of the current topics and talk about them with your child. • Let us know of any changes in your child’s daily routine • Let the school know if your child is ill. • Label all your child’s belongings. • Volunteer to help in class or on school trips!

  15. Swimming and PE • Earrings should be taken out or covered (using tape or plasters) for all PE & Swimming Lessons. If they need to be covered, please can this be done at home, rather than the nurse doing it, as she is very busy! • Hair should be tied back and clips used to keep ‘straggly bits’ out of faces for PE and Swimming Lessons. • If children are wearing lace up trainers for PE, they must be able to tie them themselves or wear Velcro trainers. • Swimming costumes must be 1 piece for the girls and tight fitting trunks, shorts or speedos, not ‘board shorts’ (beach shorts) for the boys. All-in-one protective suits are fine for boys and girls. There is no need for anybody to wear ‘rash vests’ as the pool is completely shaded. • All children should have some ‘crocs,’ flip flops or shoes that can be put on quickly at the pool, in the unlikely event that we have to leave the area quickly. • Please ensure that your child has a towel big enough to dry themselves with, but not too big that they will trip over it! Hooded towels are great!
