  5. Attendance Good attendance is important to ensure good progress Attendance below 90% is now categorised as persistent absenteeism Term time leave will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances

Uniform · Bottle green sweatshirt with school logo · White or green polo shirt · Pinafore dress, grey skirt or trousers · Black or dark sensible shoes · Plain white/grey/black socks tights · Plain black/white or green hijab PE Kit—Plain, St Mark’s green or white t-shirt, plain dark coloured or white shorts, plain tracksuit, black plimsolls No jewellery unless for religious reasons Uniform at St Mark’s In preparation for the new academic year in September please can I remind parents and carers of the school uniform expectations.

  11. Assessment We will be assessing children against end of year objectives set out in the National Curriculum During the year we will be assessing whether your child is on track to meet those objectives At the end of the year children will be assessed using the following:

  12. Home Learning Home Learning books will be given out on Fridays and handed in the following Wednesday. English: daily reading – to be recorded in reading records. Phonics patterns and spelling words to learn. Maths: a task relating to the topic currently being studied. This may be on a worksheet or on MyMaths website. Topic: An open ended topic-related task once each half term.

  13. English Teaching Year 1 • Reading • Guided Reading • Each class has a daily session. • Will read with the teacher or other adult multiple times each week. • Other activities include pre reading and comprehension questions.

  14. Reading at Home • What we ask of you: • Approx. 10 minutes daily reading. • Reading diary in school everyday. • Ask your child about what they’ve read. • Initial or comment the diary each day. • Talk about and enjoy books at home and read aloud to your child – whatever age they are!

  15. Writing Power of Reading Quality texts which stimulate writing in a range of genres

  16. Writing Lessons involve: • Discussion and drama • Deconstruction of examples • Teacher modelling – shared writing • Clear success criteria • Opportunities to improve and edit writing • Guided writing groups • Feedback and support from the teacher

  18. Phonics in Year 1 Phonics Screening All children in Year 1 across the country will complete a Phonics Screening in the Summer Term. The phonics screening is an assessment of children’s ability to decode and read real and nonsense words. Phonics workshop for Parents 4th October 9am and 3.30pm

  20. How grammar is taught: • Explicit teaching of new concepts • Use of No Nonsense Grammar • Finding examples in texts • Teacher modelling during shared writing • Embedded during independent writing

Spelling in Year 1 • What is taught: • Tricky words and high frequency words • Common exception words • A range of spelling patterns – taught across the year (linked to phonics teaching) • How spelling is taught: • Phonics lessons • Common exception words practised during writing lessons • 5 spellings sent for homework • Handwriting practise • Weekly dictation • Eg It was a ____________ winter day.
