Things you need to know before we get going… • Countries in Europe were becoming more and more suspicious of each other. • Germany was jealous of Britain’s empire and wanted an empire of it’s own. • The Balkan countries were up for grabs. • Alsace-Lorraine – argued about for ages and ….. • Weapons were being developed all across Europe.

  5. If that is too much to take in, just remember…. • Countries in Europe were getting more and more greedy and • They were VERY suspicious of “the other side”.

  6. Fill in the sheet on your desk for each country Country Name: Main Aim: Who stands in the way of this? Why? Any other aims or worries?

  8. So, what is the situation in Europe at this time….? • What are some of the possible causes for WWI? • So, as with any event the causes need a “trigger” to set the event going. • You are now “representing” the country on your table • Think about the main aims and worries you have…

  9. What if? • Germany attacks UK? • Germany attacks France? • Russia attacks Germany? (Remember: France and UK will only support Russia if Russia didn’t start the fight!) • Austria-Hungary attacks Serbia?

  10. What was the trigger?Which of these are likely to have killed 20 million people by starting World War I • A man takes a wrong turning in a car. • A battleship is sunk. • The leader of one country insults the people of another. • An army moves across a border. • A bomb is dropped.
