This text explores the foundational principle that a man must be called of God to serve in the priesthood, as articulated in Exodus 28:1 and supported by Hebrews 5:4. It reinforces the Church's teaching that the authority to preach the gospel and administer its ordinances is conferred through prophecy and the laying on of hands by those in authority. President David O. McKay highlights the importance of divine calling, echoing the eternal truth that priesthood service is not self-appointed but divinely ordained.

Exodus 28:1 “In plain, unmistakable terms the Church declares that ‘a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands, by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.’ (Articles of Faith, No. 5.) In this declaration the Church but reiterates the words of one who bore Christ’s authority in the Meridian of Time, and who, in writing upon this very question, said, ‘And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.’ (Heb. 5:4.)” (David O. McKay, Gospel Ideals [1953], 165). President David O. McKay Called and Ordained to the Priesthood
