1854: Congress passes the Kansas Nebraska Act • Senator from Illinois, Stephen Douglas, supports Manifest Destiny • Supported the expansionism • Trans-continental railroad • Railroad ran though the Kansas-Nebraska territories • Introduced the K-N Act on the basis of POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY • The Missouri Compromise is DEAD!
1855-1860: “Bleeding Kansas” • Violence breaks out in Kansas between abolitionists and slave-owners • In Pottawatomie, John Brown led a group of abolitionists and massacred five slave owners.. • The K-N Act pushed people to flock to a new political party • New party opposed expansion of slavery • Abe Lincoln is their fearless leader
The Dred Scott Decision • 1857 Dred Scott v. Sandford • Dred Scott.. Slave taken to Illinois by his owner • Illinois was a free state • The Supreme Court ruled against Scott!! • Chief Justice Taney declared that Scott was not a citizen and could not sue for freedom • Taney: slaves were “beings of an inferior order” that had “no rights which the white man was bound to respect” • Taney: Federal govt. had no authority to limit the expansion of slavery • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j3lKSs2ZoA
