  1. ART DECO 1924 - 1940 Art Deco is an international decorative arts movement, most popular between the years 1924 - 1940. It is a style of drawing, that relies on bold designs, clear lines, vibrant colours and patterns. Geometric shapes and intense colour schemes are prominent. Art Deco’s main characteristics are derived from the various painting styles of the early twentieth century, ranging from Cubism to Italian Futurism. Art Deco is usually associated to the architecture of the 1930s and speed and luxury. Recently it has seen a revival. Art Deco had an extensive influence on architecture in the 1930s and 1940s. Many buildings on the coast of Florida have an Art Deco exterior, tending to be symmetrical with distinctive windows and colours. Left: Many car designs for the 1930s and 1940s were influenced by Art Deco. The automobile seen opposite has a streamlined and elegant appeal. The design suggests speed, style and luxury. Left: The Art Deco movement even influenced the design and layout of posters. The poster shown opposite has typical Art Deco colours and displays the fashion and architecture of the 1930s.

Art Deco patterns tend to have:Distinctive circular patterns.Bold Straight Lines.Subtle use of colour and shade.Often look rather abstract. Font Style (below) Art Deco even has its own style of writing (font). This is distinctive by the contrasting broadness and thinness of parts of the same letter, with the colour being black.

  10. Specification Marking - Explanation Any three relevant explanations. Possible responses: • 1. Prevent the item/product (inside) from becoming tarnished or dusty. • 2. It should not break when in use. • 3. This will make finding your product easy. • 4. Making things in bulk reduces the unit cost. • 5. No one should be injured when using the travel storage device. • 6. It should be easy and comfortable to use. • 7. It should withstand everyday use. • 8. It should prevent the products inside from being stolen. • 9. Distinctive circular patterns like the Chrysler building in New York. • 10. The store device should be made from wood.
