  7. Organization of the Executive Branch ~ Executive branch of Georgia is largest branch Leaders: • Governor • Lieutenant Governor • Secretary of State • Attorney General • Commissioner of Insurance • Commissioner of Agriculture • Commissioner of Labor • State Superintendent of Schools

  8. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) ~ plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia’s roads and highways ~ has many offices throughout the state ~ yellow Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO) respond to highway accidents and stranded motorist

  9. Georgia Department of Public Safety ~ created in 1937 to protect Georgia’s citizens and their property Made up of several departments: (1)Georgia Highway Patrol (patrols all highways) (2) Capitol Police (3) Motor Carrier Compliance Division (regulates big rigs)

  10. Department of Economic Development ~ encourages outside investment, trade, and tourism in Georgia ~ especially encourages film production here (Forest Gump, The Blind Side, and Zombieland were filmed in Georgia)

  11. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ~ keeps Georgia’s rivers and lakes safe and clean ~ operates state parks and preserves state historical sites ~ enforces state hunting, fishing, and boating laws

Department of Education (DOE) ~ founded in 1870 ~ oversees all faucets of public education in Georgia ~ ensures educational laws are followed ~ ensures that federal and state funds are used properly ~ State Superintendent reports directly to Governor Department of Education (DOE) 5 offices: (1) Curriculum and Instruction (2) Finance and Business Operations (3) Instructional Technology and Media (4) Policy and External Affairs (5)Teacher and Student Support
